UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT GUIDE
Everything you need to know
about academics
The Academic Registry publishes an Undergraduate Student Guide to give you an overview of the academic aspects of your undergraduate studies.
Outcome-Based Education
HKUST implements Outcome-Based Education (OBE) in its programs and courses, utilizing criterion-referenced assessments. In this approach, student performance is evaluated based on the achievement of Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs). Unlike norm-referenced assessments, which foster competition among students, criterion-referenced assessments promote a collaborative learning environment. By understanding CILOs, students can better grasp the expectations and objectives of their courses, enabling them to focus their efforts on achieving these goals.
CALENDAR DATES
The academic year has two regular terms (Fall and Spring) and two non-regular terms (Winter and Summer). Each regular term normally has 13 weeks for scheduled classes. Immediately after the 13th week there is a short study break, followed by an examination period. There is a break in the Spring Term around Easter.
The Winter Term is scheduled between the two regular terms for special academic programs, research symposiums and other activities. The Summer Term bridges the end of the Spring Term and the beginning of the next Fall Term. Most students do not need to attend the Winter and Summer terms.
For the dates of term classes, study breaks, examination periods, public holidays, etc., please see our Academic Calendar for the latest updates:
COMMON CORE
Learn outside of your major
Broaden your knowledge by exploring subjects outside of your major.
The undergraduate curriculum aims to provide a well-balanced education to students. In addition to courses in the field of major study and related areas, each undergraduate program includes a requirement for common core education. This includes courses to be taken in specific common core areas. The Common Core Program strives to provide you with a well-rounded quality education that broadens your horizons, inspires and ignites your passion for learning and empowers you for lifelong pursuit of excellence.
The Common Core curriculum for students admitted in 2025-26 will be available in August 2025. Stay tuned for updates on the University Common Core Program website.
LANGUAGE STUDIES
The Center for Language Education offers credit-bearing courses of various lengths and delivery modes in English, Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish. It also provides a rich variety of language activities, including short courses, workshops, advising sessions, and cultural events. The Center serves both undergraduate and postgraduate students, adopting an interactive approach to language teaching that encourages active participation and meaningful use of language.
Learning a language offers a window into the societies and cultures where it is spoken. It broadens your perspective, enriches your personal and academic life, and equips you for today’s globalized world.
English is the primary language of international communication in business and academia. At HKUST, English courses are part of the University Common Core, helping students develop academic literacy while improving their overall proficiency. Additional courses focus on enhancing communication skills based on programs' and students’ individual needs and interests.
For detailed information about our English courses, visit: http://cle.hkust.edu.hk/courses. If you have further questions, feel free to email us at lcstdadvice@ust.hk. We look forward to hearing from you!
Research postgraduate students are required to take English courses that develop academic writing and speaking skills to support their research. The Center offers further support through workshops covering thesis writing, conference presentations, and the design of effective research posters.
With the expansion of cultural and economic partnerships between China and other countries, learning Chinese is becoming ever more valuable for academic and professional success. Our Putonghua courses help students develop communication skills for both workplace and global contexts. Cantonese courses are also available for non-local students seeking to develop practical competence in everyday life in Hong Kong.
In today’s interconnected world, multilingualism is a vital skill and a significant advantage in cross-cultural communication and the global job market. The Center’s third language courses provide a solid foundation in both the language and its cultural context, with an emphasis on practical oral communication for everyday situations.
Our iLANG program, led by a team of Language Activity Instructional Assistants and Teaching Associates, offers a diverse array of interactive activities related to language, culture, and communication. These activities foster the development of essential 21st-century skills—both inside and outside the classroom.
Our activities include:
- A Language Ambassador Program
- Orientation events for new students
- Student-led social gatherings and community projects
- Film discussion groups and guest speaker events
- Advising sessions and skills workshops
- Short courses in English, Chinese, and third languages
Wherever you are on your language learning journey, iLANG is here to support you. You are also warmly invited to visit the Language Commons—a welcoming space for studying, collaborating, and connecting with others. Check out the iLANG website for the latest updates and activity schedules.
