Welcome from the President

Dear new students,

Welcome to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) as you embark on one of the most exciting and memorable journeys of your life. We understand that starting university can be challenging when you have moved away from familiar faces and surroundings. We are always here to support your transition, so you can enjoy your university experiences to the fullest.

The spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has put all of us in uncharted territory. No one is immune to the virus and no place is unaffected by the outbreak. While we haven’t had sufficient prior knowledge and experience to fully respond to this global threat yet, let’s learn, invent and be open-minded and supportive to each other during this difficult time. Together, we will turn this global challenge into our collective and valuable life experience.

The pandemic and other societal challenges in front of us have undermined trust and respect among groups and individuals. At HKUST, diversity is at the heart of everything we do. We appreciate differences in opinion, culture, value and religion, and welcome our members to express, share and discuss their views openly in mutually respectful and appreciative manners. You will meet students, professors and staff from many countries and regions. Enjoy and appreciate the opportunities interacting with them because you will have much to learn from their perspectives. Equally, they will enjoy meeting you and knowing your background, experiences and perspective. The world is not only big but also interesting to us all.

HKUST is a place for you and your fellows to co-create personal experience that you will remember for life. Our faculty and colleagues will do our best to offer progressive and forward-looking education, and your participation is vital. Follow your passion, be prepared to become a competent professional in the fields of your choice while being a citizen making contribution to Hong Kong, region and the world.

Again, welcome to HKUST! We look forward to meeting you on campus.
